From Publishers Weekly Young Griffin doesn't like the dark. Every night the dark "made his toes curl up/ and his hands grow cold/ and his heart beat fast/ and his legs turn to jelly." So Griffin turns on every light in his room and snuggles up with his teddy bear. When his mother calls to him to turn out the lights, Griffin longs to have someone stay with him so he won't be afraid of the dark. His mother tells him that God, who is bigger than either Griffin's mother or father, "can fit in your room, fit in your bed, fit in you!" That night Griffin feels God's presence in his room and sleeps peacefully, no longer afraid of the dark. Munger's soft, fuzzy watercolors feature undefined characters that don't serve the text. Higgs (The Sunflower Parable) weaves Bible verses into the story to remind children of God's presence. Ages 2-6. Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc. Amazon.com A horse is a horse of course unless of course the horse is Black Beauty. Animal-loving children have been devoted to Black Beauty throughout this century, and no doubt will continue through the next. Although Anna Sewell's classic paints a clear picture of turn-of-the-century London, its message is universal and timeless: animals will serve humans well if they are treated with consideration and kindness. Black Beauty tells the story of the horse's own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails--in a gentle, 19th-century way--against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty's fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse-human relationships to human-human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all. (Ages 9 to 12) --This text refers to the Hardcover edition. From Publishers Weekly In this abridgement of Sewell's classic story, McKinley has managed nicely to retain Beauty's unique voice as well as the most-remembered stories, while making the text more accessible to younger readers. Jeffers's fine ink illustrations will satisfy even the most demanding of horse-lovers with her ability to capture each horse's personality. This version brings back the sharpness of the cruelty towards Beauty and his companions, and McKinley has rightfully retained the pain and the ugliness of some of the incidents. Children will still weep at the death of Ginger, and Jeffers's portrayal of the barn fire is quite frightening. It's an elegant edition, which will linger with readers until they are ready to tackle the original. Children of Promise African-American Literature and Art for Young PeopleAuthor: Sullivan, Charles (Editor) ISBN: 0-8109-3170-2
| Pages: 128Format: HardcoverPublisher: Harry N. AbramsPublished: October 10, 1991 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Publishers Weekly: The work of more than 60 writers, poets, painters, photographers and historical figures forms this richly diverse and well-chosen introduction to African American culture. Accompanying a loose chronology of political milestones from the colonial era to the present are songs of the field and chain gang, a Benin bronze and folk sculpture and more. Langston Hughes, W.E.B. Du Bois and Jacob Lawrence shine brightly here, as do paintings by John Copley, George Bellows and Thomas Eakins, representing a sympathetic white viewpoint. Captions for the old photographs attest to hope prevailing in bad times, but ultimately the pride inherent in Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech and Florence Griffith Joyner's Olympic medals succumbs to frequent hints that matters are worsening for many of today's African Americans. Concluding this lovingly produced volume, Gwendolyn Brooks's poem, "To the Young Who Want to Die," becomes a moving plea to live for a brighter day. All ages. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From School Library Journal: This presentation of literature and art for young people is elegant, appealing, rich, and dramatic with moments from African-American history. Its contents touch all periods from slavery to the present. It claims 100 poems, folk songs, and other literary excerpts that accompany more than 80 historical photographs and reproductions of paintings and sculptures. While the index is not inclusive, this is an aesthetically gratifying book that deserves wide distribution. - Helen E. Williams, formerly at University of Maryland, College Park Copyright 1992 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears Author: Marshall, James ISBN: 0-8037-0543-3
| Pages: 30 Format: Hardcover Publisher: Dial Published: September 30, 1988 Condition:
Price: USD $2.69
From Publishers Weekly: "Once there was a little girl named Goldilocks. 'What a sweet child,' said someone new in town. 'That's what you think,' said a neighbor." From the very first sentence this book takes off in typical Marshall style. Goldilocks is a self-satisfied girl used to doing exactly as she pleases. So when signs around the entrance to the shortcut read "DANGER," "TURN BACK," "VERY RISKY" and even "GO THE OTHER WAY," the undaunted lass tromps headlong into adventure. Once inside the house of the three bears, Goldilocks notices a lot of coarse brown fur and thinks, "They must have kitties." She thrashes her way through the bears' domain. Eventually, they return and scare the girl off, but whether or not she has learned her lesson is left to the imagination. Marshall's wonderfully unique characters are as offbeat and self-propelled as ever; the book boasts many jolly details and the pictures burst with color. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.
From School Library Journal: Another delightful romp through the fairy tale forest from the author of Red Riding Hood (Dial, 1987) and James Marshall's Mother Goose (Farrar, 1986) . This retelling is a Victorianesque version of a chubby, blond-hair strong-willed ``naughty little girl'' who takes a shortcut through the woods on her way to buy muffins in the next village, and invades the home of the three sophisticated bears. While the basic storyline may be recognizable to young listeners, sight gags and ironic wit are whimsically employed for those who already know the tale and/or Marshall's other works (for example, a white hen perches atop the bears' house). The tone is straightforward and droll. Marshall is careful to include basic motifs from the original tale: the bowls of porridge, the chairs, and the beds, but he takes liberties in his commentary: ``She walked right in without even bothering to knock'' and in the characters' exclamations, like ``Patooie!'' and ``Egads!'' His playful watercolor illustrations fill the pages in their comic portrayal of these well-known figures. Whether shared in a lap or with a group, this one's a winner. The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw Author: McManus, Patrick F. ISBN: 0-8050-1340-7
| Pages: 184 Format: Paperback Publisher: Holt Paperbacks Published: May 15, 1990 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
Amazon.com: The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw is a delightful treasury of McManus's favorite (mostly outdoor) adventures with friends. His stories explore the human capacity to laugh in the face of misfortune, such as "The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw" (Goombaw is Eddie Muldoon's grandmother) and "The Fried Flies, Please, and Easy on the Garlic," a story of dinner-party adversity: "Martha starts. 'I do hope you won't take offense, Mr. McGinnis, but I view hunters as the lowest form of life, not excluding bacteria and algae.' 'No offense taken,' I reply, glad for an excuse to ignore my vichyssoise, which I view as the lowest form of food, not excluding lichens and boiled beets." [CODE] American humorist Patrick McManus could make being snagged by a fishhook funny, and in fact, he does. In his story "Getting It in the Ear," he writes, "One of the more interesting things that can happen to an angler is to get a barbed hook sunk into his hide. Such is the horror and fascination of the experience that many an angler has contemplated giving up his regular work and hitting the lecture circuit to entertain audiences around the nation with a dramatic rendering of his ordeal." After all, he argues, it's the misery endured that defines the sportsman, not the fish caught or the game shot. McManus's understated, matter-of-fact vignettes--infused with amusing glimpses of life's lesser-known eternal truths-- will make you laugh.
From Publishers Weekly: McManus ( The Grasshopper Trap ) has been making outdoorsmen laugh for some time now, but his new collection of writing passes a sterner test. Here he can amuse someone who's never even baited a hook. McManus's stories generally involve either the comic misadventures of life in the wild ("A Road Less Travelled By"; "Gunkholing"; "Water Spirits") or first-person coming-of-age stories set in rural America ("The Night the Bear Ate Goombaw"; "Scritch's Creek"). His comic voice, resonating with a surprising depth of wit, is expressed in a pleasant, quirky prose style--but shows a tendency to get cute. Characters cry "Owww!" and "Arrrhhhh" and "Arp!" incessantly and excessively, and the author indulges a fondness for italic type: "I . . . gasp . . . forgot my billfold. It's . . . pant . . . in my tackle box. Get it for me . . . choke . . . will you?" This talented writer doesn't need to poke readers in the ribs to let them in on the joke.
