Internet: From Mystery to Mastery Authors: Badgett, Tom / Sandler, Corey ISBN: 1-55828-308-0
| Pages: 335Format: PaperbackPublisher: Mis PrPublished: November 1993 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Library Journal: Internet can be intimidating with all its hodgepodge of files, commands, and messages. Shouldn't we expect a book on Internet to organize some of this chaos logically? Badgett and Sandler seem to think that simulating the Internet experience on paper is the way to go; for a beginner, it doesn't make a lot of sense. In the first chapter, they log you onto the WELL, then take you to UUNET for seven pages while the meter's running at 50? a minute. It's not until Chapter 2 that they explain how a modem works! In the Chapter 6, they go on at length about the files that you can collect in your Internet explorations; why not warn everyone that just a few of these files might chew up every possible byte of space on your hard disk? Pass this one by! Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

The Internet for Dummies Authors: Levine, John R. / Baroudi, Carol / Young, Margaret Levine ISBN: 0-7645-0106-2
| Pages: 374 Format: Paperback Publisher: IDG Books Worldwide Published: February 21, 1997 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
Amazon.com: Even if you're not a dummy, the sixth edition of The Internet for Dummies is one of the best user's guides to the Internet now available. Many so-called Internet books are nothing more than printed collections of Web addresses, but John Levine, Carol Baroudi, and Margaret Levine Young recognize that deciding to use the Internet involves financial commitments and computer-hardware decisions as much as it does looking at neat pictures. That said, don't expect to set up your own e-commerce site with this book, and don't expect to find step-by-step instructions for starting your computer. But do expect to get some good advice about picking an ISP (Internet Service Provider), protecting your privacy (and your kids), and connecting with Windows or a Mac. The authors also do an exceptional job of explaining such terms as PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) and what it is for, and they even talk about the old Unix shell account (with a Lynx text browser) for those not getting a PPP account. You'll find tips for optimizing your browser for speed, building your first Web page, managing e-mail, subscribing to mailing lists, and, yes, shopping. What is most impressive, however, is the balanced approach the authors take in evaluating Web sites (they do give some Web addresses), online services, and browser software. They offer the pros and cons and let you sort it out. They also include their own Web address so you can look for updates to the book and check on their latest favorites. --Patrick O'Kelley

Quick Solutions to Great Layouts Author: Davis, Graham ISBN: 0-89134-507-8
| Pages: 144Format: HardcoverPublisher: North Light BooksPublished: June 1993 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From School Library Journal: YA-With its extensive use of color and its annotated, full-page designs, this is a practical, dynamic, easy-to-use guide for anyone from fledgling desktop publisher to professional graphic artist. Davis presents excellent models for newsletters, stationery, brochures, and advertisements-his own creations as well as actual examples from around the world-with specifications so that they may be easily replicated. Each of these hands-on sections is then organized by three levels of expertise. For those with limited experience, there is a lengthy introduction that briefly reviews aesthetics and the basics of page design. Definitions of jargon, instructions on laying out a page, selecting typefaces and pictures, and evaluating the finished product are included. In addition, each example contains a client brief and the author's solution to the client's needs. If your budget permits the choice of only one book on the subject, this should be it. Gretchen Portland, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc. Book Description: This incredible book houses a collection of 100 swipeable layouts that readers can use to create their own pieces--everything from newsletters and ads to letterheads and brochures. An invaluable introductory section reviews the core techniques for creating layouts. Next, designers are introduced to the layouts themselves. Each layout includes a full background on the piece, the reasoning behind each solution and details on how special constraints were handled. In many instances, several solutions are given to the same problem, illustrating that there is always more than one way to solve a layout and design problem. This book also includes: * Quick access to dozens of layout solutions including specs * Special techniques that can be used to enhance any layout * Insights into the factors that helped to make each layout an effective piece * Tips and advice for dealing with common problems such as working within client restrictions and handling ads with lots of visuals --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Building Corporate Portals with XML Authors: Finkelstein, Clive / Aiken, Peter G. / Zachman, John A. ISBN: 0-07-913705-9

Price: USD $1.99
Amazon.com: Getting a handle on an organization's related internal and external information is a daunting task. Building Corporate Portals with XML is a guide to moving to integrated Web portals to serve internal processes, external partners, and customers. Heavily laden with theory, this title is best suited to system architects rather than developers under tight time constraints. Coauthor Clive Finkelstein is the creator of the Information Engineering methodology, which he uses to suggest approaches to moving legacy and relational data to portal access using XML as the information backbone. The discussions are thought-provoking and quite informative, but the acronym-heavy presentation is not for everyone. After laying out the basic portal concepts, the authors move into the process of designing scalable information systems and modeling their data appropriately. The heart of the book focuses on enterprise metadata, how to define it, and how to implement it via XML. There are some concise examples of XML metadata implementation, but they are nestled within a rather complex discussion of the process of information analysis. Although the focus of this title is Web portals, the majority of the book does not focus on Web site interfaces. Instead it probes deeper, offering a mile-high view of how to approach a wide-scale portal project. Don't look to this book for code snippets to implement on your Web site--instead, use it to develop a data-oriented mindset. --Stephen W. Plain Topics covered: Strategic business planning, data modeling, metadata analysis and engineering, XML business reengineering, and quality initiatives. Book Description Explains how to solve one of the most common and vexing business problems: "I know the data is there but I can't get the information I need!" Presents corporate portal technology from planning and modeling stages to implementation. Special emphasis on converting legacy system data to modern data warehouses. For business managers who will use corporate portals, as well as the information technology staff developing them.

DOS for Dummies Author: Gookin, Dan (Editor) ISBN: 1-878058-75-4
| Pages: 316Format: PaperbackPublisher: For DummiesPublished: March 19, 1993 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
The book that changed the way computer books are written and marketed has come out in a third edition. By and large, it's the same as the previous edition (advances in MS-DOS have not been numerous), but there is some new information here. Further, DOS for Dummies remains an entertaining book and if you use DOS, it's the book you want to assist you. The basic idea of this book is that you can identify a problem you're having with your computer, ranging from how to turn the thing on to how to back up only the files that have changed since the last backup. You can then turn to the relevant section--the table of contents is very detailed--read a few pages, carry out some procedure, and move on to the next problem. You'll find sections on hardware, file management, text editing, and software installation. Later chapters deal with troubleshooting. The newest material in this release of DOS for Dummies deals with DOS 6.22 and the DOS-like shell that you can use under Windows 95 and Windows 98. For users of the latest versions of Windows, Gookin demonstrates some relevant procedures. But most of the coverage deals with DOS itself and programs that are designed to run under DOS. There's even stuff about WordStar here (it's a little-known fact of history that the Rosetta stone was written with WordStar). DOS for Dummies is funny, too, in a wry sort of way. What kind of joke is appropriate to a section about parallel ports, anyway? The author manages to infuse practically every passage with humor. Other computer books should make an effort to take themselves less seriously. The verdict: if you're using DOS--and more of you are than the Windows people would have us believe--this book will provide you with valuable help. --David Wall --This text refers to the Paperback edition. Book Description In the ephemeral world of computing, DOS For Dummies is a classic. A bestseller year after year, this fun and easy-to-understand DOS primer is as useful as ever, now with complete coverage of the latest version of DOS, Version 6.22. Whether you prefer not to use Windows or have perfectly good DOS-based applications unavailable for Windows, DOS For Dummies is your essential guide to everything from the regular chores of organizing files and optimizing hard disks to the occasional challenges of installing software drivers for new modems, printers, and other hardware devices. Author Dan Gookin also tells you what you need to know if you're moving from the DOS command-line interface to the Windows graphical user interface. Along the way, Gookin offers plenty of tips on getting the most out of DOS and out of your computer as a whole.

Computers Simplified 5th Edition Authors: Maran, Ruth / Whitehead, Paul ISBN: 0-7645-3524-2
| Pages: 227Format: PaperbackPublisher: WileyPublished: October 12, 2000 Condition:
Price: USD $2.99
IDG and maranGraphics have come very close to the ideal "superdummy" format with Computers Simplified, Fourth Edition. This book explains personal computing technology to the complete neophyte, but unlike many books for nervous newbies, this one manages to provide a complete picture without drowning the reader in details. This book does not cover the actual use of a personal computer--you won't find any explanations of how to manipulate a mouse or what the Windows 98 Start button does. Rather, Computers Simplified gives an overview of personal computing technology, from the components that make up an IBM-standard PC to the Internet and Web. After reading this heavily illustrated book, readers will know which aspects of computing interest them, and what they should look into next. The great thing about Computers Simplified is that it explains pretty much everything a new user will wonder about. For example, even though digital cameras are a relatively new phenomenon, novices will have heard about them and want to know what they can do. This is also true for Zip drives, palm-size computers, scanners, fax software, Windows NT, and dozens of other aspects of personal computers that elementary books traditionally have neglected. Computers Simplified is like a child's science book in that it mentions lots of advanced stuff, but explains it in basic terms. --David Wall --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. Product Description Paperback: 227 pages ; Dimensions (in inches): 0.62 x 10.03 x 8.52 Publisher: Wiley; 5 edition (October 12, 2000) ISBN: 0764535242 This book explains everything that a new user would be curious about in pictures! The perfect book for the computer user (or computer shopper), Computers Simplified gives the best explanations in full color -- on each of the computer types and peripherals that are available today: Mac and PC, Linux and Windows, scanners and multifunction machines, tape drives and zip drives. This book provides new or would-be users with a handheld overview of computers and what they can do for their owners.

PHP3: Programming Browser-Based Applications with PHP Author: Medinets, David ISBN: 0-07-135342-9
| Pages: 448Format: PaperbackPublisher: McGraw-Hill CompaniesPublished: October 4, 1999 Condition:
Price: USD $2.49
David Medinets's principal task in PHP3: Programming Browser-Based Applications is to find common ground for a discussion of PHP3, the database-interfacing module for the Apache Web server. Unfortunately, his task is subverted by PHP3's complexity. In principle, PHP3's Perl-like script slides into HTML. When accessed by a browser, the code is interpreted by the Apache server, building a Web page out of data pulled from an SQL database through Apache's PHP3 module. The centrality of PHP3 in linking the user to the database is clear, but the stability of a uniform PHP3 implementation in an intrinsically heterogeneous Linux/Unix environment is so problematic as to be prohibitive. To be fair, Medinets's PHP3: Programming Browser-Based Applications is a thoughtfully constructed book, but it sends mixed signals about whether it will enter the fray of PHP3 module support. Medinets's 20-page line-by-line description of building PHP3 begins with guidelines on how to make a new gcc compiler. Safe to ignore? Maybe not, because his Apache server-build instructions should be followed verbatim. A clean build and test on a generic Linux distribution is a multi-day effort because essential environment variables aren't documented--neither by Medinets nor by the PHP3 development team. Dynamical loading of the PHP3 module (the modern standard for module handling) is itself a subject of strongly worded statements in the newsgroups. Medinets has no comment on this show-stopping issue. The book consists of didactic chapters on data manipulation, regular expressions, basic object-orientation, the CGI interface, and XML, all of which get interspersed with task-oriented interludes on connecting to databases, maintaining lists, creating HTML modules, and managing concurrent access. Over 100 pages of appendices provide SQL and PHP function references and Internet resources. But the PHP3 development team must stabilize its interfaces before any single-source tract will suffice. Until then, readers must make personal commitments to read all available documentation. For the fearless few who venture into the PHP3 backcountry, Medinets offers an errata page at www.mtolive.com/phpbook to help with orientation. Active PHP3 mailing lists (www.php3.org) contain questions and answers, which are disparaging and hyperbolic but occasionally helpful. The PHP3 developers have an outpost with a stable platform, and Medinets is safe at the outpost, but his smoke signals are too far away and the winds too variable for him to be of much help to us yet. --Peter Leopold
Book Description: Usage of PHP--cross-platform, server-side, HTML embedded scripting language--is rising by 100,000 domains per month. First PHP reference on market, and it contains more code examples with more comments than any other UNIX book. Provides UNIX programmers with all the necessary tools to build dynamic Web applications and databases from open-source software. CD-ROM includes Red Hat Linux 6.0 operating system, award-winning MySQL database engine, code listings, sample applications, software documentation, and much more.
