A Woman's Worth Author: Williamson, Marianne ISBN: 0-345-38657-4
| Pages: 141 Format: Paperback Publisher: Ballantine Books Published: March 8, 1994 Condition:
Price: USD $1.69
From Publishers Weekly: Williamson ( A Return to Love ) here tells women that they are goddesses with cosmic functions. A weakness: she often lets women hear what they want to hear--how "special" they are, how beautiful, how close to nature. When she draws from her own experience, Williamson gives sound, empowering advice on relationships, work, love, sex and childrearing. Still, her soft focus on the so-called feminine virtues, including that of assuming the submissive role during sex, often seems reactionary and contradictory, as when she argues that women were meant to be passive, but later claims that woman should assert their power. This mix of the mystical, the modern (Williamson says one of her old boyfriends left her for a "bimbo") and the Christian could be called visionary--but the combination doesn't always make sense, as in this statement: "Our Kingdom is our life and our life is our Kingdom. And we are all meant to rule from a glorious place." Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
From Library Journal: This is essentially a feel-good book, meant to inspire and empower women to take control over their lives and help return the world to the feminine qualities from which it has strayed. As in Williamson's best-selling first book, A Return to Love ( LJ 1/92), love is the key. Although Williamson's messsage is admirable--who among us is against the prospect of a world order based on love and understanding with an end to all that is antithetical?--many readers will be put off by the means she posits to that end. Most women do not think in terms of growth from girl to princess to queen to goddess. In addition, her assumption that all women intuitively know what is right is at best optimistic. This work could serve as a starting point for those who have difficulty approaching the concept of feminism. The success of Williamson's first book indicates New Age enthusiasts will be attracted here; aticipate demand where the first was popular. - Kathleen L. Atwood, Pomfret Sch. Lib., Ct. You Can't Plant Tomatoes in Central Park The Urban Dropout's Guide to Rural Relocation Author: Ruegg, Frank / Bianchina, Paul ISBN: 0-88282-060-5

From Library Journal: While researching this book, the authors sent questionnaires to individuals who had successfully made the transition from urban to rural environments. They use these survey responses to illustrate many of the common sense suggestions in this handy reference. The authors proffer tips on determining best relocation choices, analyzing the local economy, job hunting, and moving. Much of this is applicable to anyone facing a move to a new town, large or small. Although little in this book will be new to reference librarians, and much of its information could be compiled from other sources, it will be a useful one-stop source for public libraries. - Randy Dykhuis, OCLC, Dublin, Ohio Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Zodiac Author: Graysmith, Robert ISBN: 0-425-21218-1
|
Pages: 355 Format: Paperback Publisher: Berkley Published: January 2, 2007 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Library Journal: From 1968 to the early 1970s, the self-styled "Zodiac" killer made headlines in the San Francisco Bay Area. In random attacks, he is known to have murdered six persons; in a series of letters to newspapers, which sometimes included cryptograms, he boasted of many more. To this day, the infamous case remains unsolved and surprisingly little has been written about it. Graysmith, a San Francisco Chronicle staff member, was obsessed with the case from the beginning and he has continued to investigate it as an amateur sleuth. Except for "Zodiac" himself, the author now knows more about the case than anyone. In this full, chronological account, which will fascinate true crime readers, he speculates about the most likely suspect. Recommended. Gregor A. The Battered Child Author: Halfer, Ray / Kempe, Ruth (Editor) ISBN: 0-226-32632-2
| Pages: 470 Format: Paperback Publisher: University of Chicago Press Published: September 1988 Condition:
Price: USD $2.29
Book Description: First published in 1968, The Battered Child quickly became a landmark work. Our awareness of child abuse today is due in no small part to the remarkable impact of its first and subsequent editions. This edition of this classic text continues the legacy. While updating and significantly adding to previous editions, the fifth edition retains the multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach that initially set the work apart. This edition contains chapters from professionals in such diverse fields as pediatrics, psychiatry, legal studies, and social work that reflect the past decade's extraordinary advances in research and techniques. Twenty of the book's 30 chapters are entirely new, while the remaining material has been extensively revised. Part I provides a historical overview of child abuse and neglect as well as background material on the cultural, psychiatric, social, economic, and legal contexts of child maltreatment. Part II discusses the processes of assessing cases of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and neglect from the unique perspectives of all the professionals involved, including teachers, pediatricians, and social workers. Part III describes intervention and treatment, focusing on legal issues, investigative procedures, and therapeutic processes, while Part IV addresses prevention and policy issues. Previous editions of The Battered Child have earned the labels of "a classic" and a "Bible." With its up-to-date information, unequaled scope, and contributions from experts on every aspect of child abuse, the fifth edition of this cornerstone text is even more essential to the field than its predecessors. "Comprehensive and up-to-date."-David Cottrell, British Journal of Psychiatry "A valuable contribution to the field of abuse and neglect"-Prasanna Nair, Journal of the American Medical Association

Texasville Author: McMurtry, Larry ISBN: 0-671-62533-0
| Pages: 542 Format: Hardcover Publisher: Simon & Schuster Published: April 15, 1987 Condition:
Price: USD $2.99
From Publishers Weekly: In this arresting, funny-sad sequel to The Last Picture Show, McMurtry's small Texas town of Thalia has gone from boom to bust practically overnight, a victim of the mid-'80s oil glut. Under the strain of financial calamity, the townsfolk are becoming increasingly irrationalone man dreams of bombing OPEC, the mayor is going quietly mad, sexual mores are turning bizarre, and the civic leaders are pressing on with a centennial celebration even though there's nothing to celebrate. The stresses of the time seem concentrated in Duane, a one-time oil millionaire on the verge of bankruptcy who has four untamable children, a disaffected wife and a diminishing grip on his sanity. Duane's problems are exacerbated when his high school sweetheart, Jacy, now a movie actress, comes bowling into town like tumbleweed. McMurtry, who won a Pulitzer Prize for Lonesome Dove, is a writer with a distinctive voice, a profound understanding of Texans and a brilliant gift for capturing the vagrant moods of the heart. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal: Can a novel that deals with midlife crises, the loss of youthful aspirations, the withering of love, and the entombing of dreams be side-splittingly funny? This one is. Pulitzer Prize winner McMurtry returns to Thalia, Texas, setting of The Last Picture Show , where the once lovelorn teenagers are now town fathers planning a county centennial celebration. But what's there to celebrate? The town got rich with the oil boom and is now going broke with the oil glut, and its residents seem as sunk in emotional depression as the town is in its economic one. What McMurtry's characters take most seriously and worry most about inevitably turns out comically. The unplanned high points of the celebration are a tumbleweed stampede, broom-handle battles between teetotalers and beer-guzzlers, and an egg bombardment. For some this may seem a less than satisfying sequel to The Last Picture Show , but it is a more mature book, less angry, more tolerant, and more accepting of human foibles. Why Government Doesn't Work How Reducing Government Will Bring Us Safer Cities, Better Schools, Lower Taxes, More Freedom & Prosperity for All Author: Browne, Harry ISBN: 0-312-13623-4
|
Pages: 253 Format: Hardcover Publisher: St. Martins Press Published: 1995 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
Amazon.com: Harry Browne, the Libertarian Party candidate for President in 1996, outlines his views on government and lays out his platform. According to Browne, just about everything from rising healthcare costs to our collapsing morality is the fault of a government that differs from organized crime only because it "has flags in front of its offices." The answer to all our ills, he says, lies with free enterprise, which should be put in charge of such tasks as national defense and education. Among the things he promises to do if elected: pardon anyone ever convicted of violating federal weapons-control laws, and sell the country's national parks.

What Cops Know Cops Talk About What They Do, How They Do It, and What It Does to ThemAuthor: Fletcher, Connie ISBN: 0-394-57719-1
| Pages: 303 Format: Hardcover Publisher: Villard Published: December 26, 1990 Condition:
Price: USD $2.99
From Publishers Weekly: Fletcher, who teaches journalism at Loyola University (and whose sister is a police officer), here interviews 125 Chicago cops about such topics as working on the street; crimes involving violence, property, sex, narcotics; organized crime. Readers learn that one of the most difficult jobs in law enforcement is raiding the quarters of drug dealers, that even hardened veterans have a rough time restraining themselves when arresting child molesters, that the Mafia is now branching out into supplying body parts for transplant surgery. The police officers are forthright, the narrative seamless as the author makes her case that "what cops know isn't scientific, quantifiable, or statistical knowledge," but that they are "privy to special knowledge." Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal: The author, who teaches journalism at Loyola University of Chicago, interviewed 125 of that city's police officers to discover what their job is like both technically (how they deal with crime and criminals) and emotionally (how it affects them). Roughly 900 excerpts are grouped by topic, ranging from property crimes to organized crime. Excerpts are unsigned, but each section concludes with brief biographies of those quoted. This first-person, humorous, shocking, and at times sensational material effectively brings the reader inside police life, particularly in the chapters on "The Street" and "Narcotics." Loose organization and lack of scientific method limit the book's usefulness for criminal justice students--Anthony V. Bouza 's "The Police Mystique" provides a more thoughtful description and critique of police and the criminal justice system--but for the general reader it both satisfies curiosity and offers insight. - Mary Jane Brustman, SUNY at Albany Libs. Maybe (Maybe Not) Second Thoughts From a Secret Life Author: Fulghum, Robert ISBN: 0-679-41960-8
| Pages: 228 Format: Hardcover Publisher: Villard Published: August 10, 1993 Condition:
Price: USD $2.29
From Publishers Weekly: The author's missionary spirit glows even brighter in his fourth book than in its bestselling predecessors All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten et al. In this collection of "second thoughts from a secret life," he uses musings about ironing a shirt, conducting the last movement of Beethoven's Ninth and selling school chocolate to emphasize the give and take, the unpredictability of the well-lived life. What Fulghum says of Einstein could well apply to himself: "Ambiguity remains at the end of the equation of his best thinking." If a chapter on the consumption of urine by certain cultures is distasteful, Fulghum's ruminations nevertheless make zesty entertainment. His many fans will enjoy his latest contribution and accept his invitation to join him for singing and storytelling on the "22 Cities, 22 Causes, One Good Reason Tour" he'll be making from September through November to benefit Literacy Volunteers, Special Olympics, Habitat for Humanity and other causes. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From School Library Journal: Fulghum shares some of his insights with readers. They include episodic, kaleidoscopic mental explorations of events observed or imagined. You may be surprised at the commonalities between one adult male's perspectives and their own. Points to ponder abound. Whether read straight through or dipped into for a couple of minutes, beginning on almost any page, this engaging narrative offers a break from the daily grind.
