The Balance Balancing Your Body to Achieve Ideal Weight, High Energy, and Optimal HealthAuthor: Garcia, Oz / Coleman, Carol / Bisson, Lionel ISBN: 0-06-039254-1
| Pages: 240Format: HardcoverPublisher: CollinsPublished: September 23, 1998 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
Amazon.com: Oz Garcia is known in New York City as the nutritionist to see if you want to become full of vitality like his other clients, among them actress Winona Ryder, designer Nicole Miller, and supermodel Yasmeen Ghouri. He wrote The Balance in part because he couldn't keep up with the demand for his consultations. With a 45-question quiz, Garcia will help you define yourself as a metabolically fast, slow, or mixed burner. While you'd think it'd be beneficial to be a fast burner, Garcia says that's not necessarily so: people who are on the thin, nervous side often pay for their figures with fatigue, depleted mineral stores, moodiness, and an impaired ability to concentrate. On the other hand, more than two-thirds of Americans are slow burners, he says, which means a tendency toward hyperinsulinemia, insomnia, heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health problems. Even if you suspect you know what kind of burner you are, Garcia will enlighten you with specific foods, supplements, types of exercise, and lifestyle suggestions to try--including tips for eating out--to help improve your metabolism and overall health. Besides avoiding wheat--the dietary evil he says all types should avoid--the program is remarkably flexible and realistic. There's no calorie counting, and if you're at a social event and go off the program for a night, Garcia says so be it. Just hop back on the program as soon as possible afterwards. In addition to The Balance's aim of bringing about greater energy, relief from PMS, improved resilience to stress, and a decrease in the frequency of mood swings, Garcia says it even boosts concentration and mental functioning, thereby improving relationships and even making therapy sessions more effective. While this may sound farfetched, Garcia's followers swear it's a remarkably effective, life-changing program. Rachel Hayes, Cosmopolitan "My level of energy was outrageous, my complexion was clean - and no more menstrual cramps. I was amazed...At the end of three months I had dropped the 15 pounds I set out to lose."

Outrageous Practices Author: Laurence, Leslie / Weinhouse, Beth ISBN: 0-449-90745-7
| Pages: 434Format: HardcoverPublisher: FawcettPublished: September 20, 1994 Condition:
Price: USD $2.49
From Publishers Weekly: Syndicated health columnist Laurance and medical writer Weinhouse (The Healthy Traveler) offer an up-to-date, comprehensive report on the state of women's health care in the U.S. They substantiate their charge that the medical establishment neglects the interests and needs of women. While research on women's reproductive system has been inadequate, women have also been scanted, and often excluded, from studies of ailments afflicting both sexes, such as AIDS, heart disease and obesity. In geriatrics, women are similarly disregarded. The authors' agenda for a "woman friendly" system includes "universal access, affordability and coverage" at every level of care and age. First serial to Ladies' Home Journal; author tour. Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal: Medical journalists Laurence and Weinhouse claim that the male-dominated medical profession treats women as second-class customers while ignoring many of their valid complaints. Moreover, much of standard medical practice is based on research using exclusively male subjects, so these treatments may not be directly transferable to women. The authors outline a history of exclusion of women from the medical profession and a horrifying history of "research" on strictly female ailments. They also examine such outside influences as the court systems, foundations that distribute research grants, and drug companies to determine how they reduce or aggravate the problem. This book is well referenced and very readable. Excerpts are planned for the September issue of Ladies Home Journal, so expect a lot of requests from patrons. Essential for public libraries. From Publishers Weekly: Running noses and antihistamines may not make for the most exciting of reads, but for someone suffering from allergies or a head cold, Boggs ( No More Running Noses ) has encouraging words. There's no need to suffer. Although no miracle drugs or cures exist, he emphasizes, steps can be taken by people whose physical well-being is temporarily distressed by pollutants, the environment or pets. Detailed chapters take on the causes of allergies, the benefits and down side of allergy shots, occupational rhinitis, house dusts, the various pollens that cause seasonal allergic rhinitis--and conditions that masquerade as allergic rhinitis. Although a series of questions and answers included in most chapters may seem gimmicky, the information will be valuable to sufferers and their families. Too often, Boggs claims, people take the wrong medication for their symptoms. User-friendly charts assess prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. Equally important, the author provides lists of manufacturers of home air-filtration units, medications reported to produce nasal symptoms as an occasional side effect and sources for additional information. From Library Journal: Siegel's first book, Love , Medicine & Miracles , has headed the paperback best-seller lists since it came out in that format over a year ago. Yes, this latest book is rather haphazardly organized. Yes, it is somewhat repetitive and rambling. Yes, indeed, it needed far better editing. But the hope, spiritual guidance, and compassion it provides, both to people with life-threatening diseases and to their friends, relatives, and health-care providers, overwhelmingly transcend any stylistic imperfections. Ageless Body, Timeless Mind The Quantum Alternative to Growing Old Author: Deepak Chopra, M.D. ISBN: 0-517-59257-6
| Pages: 342Format: HardcoverPublisher: HarmonyPublished: June 15, 1993 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Publishers: Weekly Chopra ( Quantum Healing ) is one of our perennial gurus, appealing to millions but offering them a suspect brew of panacea and escapism. The message of his new book? "We are not victims of aging, sickness, and death. These are part of the scenery, not of the seer, who is immune to any form of change. This seer is the spirit, the expression of eternal being." The basis for his belief, Chopra argues, is quantum physics and the work of such scientists as Heisenberg, Bohr and Einstein, with whose help Chopra proposes to tell us how to stave off the inevitable changes brought on by mortality and the passing of years. He advises us on how to "defeat entropy," to "believe" enough to offer palpable resistance to processes of physical alteration, and to "reinterpret your body" such that renewal will come of it. He himself believes in "a land where no one is old," and where "we create our bodies as we create the experience of our world." He is also a proponent of "the science of longevity," and cites research by doctors (sometimes nameless) to back himself up when expounding upon it. But alert readers will finish the book with unsettling questions, the result of a book that is rife with inspirational conviction but at times thin on substance. 150,000 first printing; major ad/promo; author tour; BOMC and QPB selection. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Library Journal: Chopra, a proponent of the Indian Maharishi Ayurveda system of healing, has written a book that combines philosophy, biology, and modern health research in an attempt to convince the reader that the effects of aging are largely preventable. Since the practical suggestions are mixed in with theory, case studies, and rather complicated biological data, the book sometimes rambles and seems disorganized. Several of the recommendations about diet and exercise contradict each other. Followers of Chopra will demand this book. For libraries that have the author's previous books ( Perfect Health , LJ 6/1/90) and large alternative medicine collections. When a Parent Has Cancer A Guide to Caring for Your Children Author: Harpham M.D., Wendy Schlessel ISBN: 0-06-018709-3
| Pages: 208Format: HardcoverPublisher: HarperCollinsPublished: February 26, 1997 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Library Journal: Harpham (After Cancer, LJ 8/94) deals here with "the difficulties of raising children when a parent has cancer and proposes approaches for preventing and responding to common problems in a healthy way." Harpham, a parent with cancer, is also a physician, and the last 47 pages of this title is a children's book, Becky and the Worry Cup, drawn from the experience of her own children. In discussing parenting issues, Harpham includes examples for handling specific problems, with especially important points set in boldface. Although most of the book deals with caring for children under the age of ten, there is a chapter on teenagers. Appendixes include a glossary that children can understand, a list of resources and support groups, and a bibliography for children and parents. A similar offering is Pat Brack's Moms Don't Get Sick (LJ 8/90). Recommended for consumer health/patient education collections.?Mary J. Jarvis, Methodist Hosp. Medical Lib., Lubbock, Tex. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.
From Booklist: A parent's cancer is a family crisis. Children will adapt, however, if their fundamental physical and emotional needs are met, if they understand what is happening, and if they know that they will be cared for no matter what happens. Basing her efforts on those three perceptions and drawing on her expertise as a physician and her experience as a person with cancer, Harpham provides practical advice on caring for children of all ages during diagnosis and treatment and helpful insights for helping them cope with grief, loss, uncertainty, and fear of death. She accompanies her guidance for parents with a story for children--"Becky and the Worry Cup" --that illustrates the concerns kids have and how parents can help them cope. Both the guidebook and the story are sympathetic, sensitive to intense emotions, and, above all, empowering to parents and children facing the significant changes life-threatening illness demands of a family. The Healing Foods The Ultimate Authority on the Curative Power of NutritionAuthor: Hausman, Patricia Hurley, Judith Benn ISBN: 0-87857-812-9
| Pages: 461Format: HardcoverPublisher: Rodale PressPublished: August 1989 Condition:
Price: USD $2.49
Amazon.com: Sometimes nutrition just seems too complicated for the average person to learn, like thinking you'll take up calculus when you can barely figure a 15-percent tip (that's why so many of us eat at fast-food outlets--no math required). Daily press reports on the latest amazing discoveries or conflicting research results only further our determination to take up better nutrition--next year. But long-time collaborators Patricia Hausman and Judith Benn Hurley make healthful eating easy. The Healing Foods is laid out in their standard A-Z format with headings for recommended foodstuffs ("Apples," "Apricots," "Artichokes") and common ailments that can be improved by eating right ("Cholesterol," "Colds," "Constipation"). The information is presented in plain language, and the short, informative chapters (usually two to four pages) are easily digestible. The healing foods themselves are items common to any grocery store. Each food chapter gives a brief explanation of the food's intrinsic value, suggestions on purchasing the best produce, tips for storage, and an "Accent on Enjoyment" section that offers ideas for dressing up plain fruits and vegetables to be more appetizing. The recipes that conclude each of these chapters are flavorful and simple to prepare (Sautéed Chicken with Prunes and Shallot, Cauliflower with Mustard Sauce and Dill). Most recipes serve four and take under half an hour to prepare. Even the dietary changes suggested in the chapters on conquering specific health problems are easily accommodated (they are not lifestyle changes, only menu ideas) by the average person. This is not nutritional calculus; it's basic math accessible to everyone. --Brenda Pittsley

Equal Partners A Physician's Call for a New Spirit of Medicine Author: Heymann, Jody Heymann ISBN: 0-316-35993-9
| Pages: 257Format: HardcoverPublisher: Little Brown & CoPublished: March 1995 Condition:
Price: USD $1.99
From Publishers Weekly: What happens when a doctor is admitted to the hospital with a serious condition? For Heymann, an intern and a graduate of both the Harvard Medical School and the Kennedy School of Government, it was a harrowing yet vastly enlightening experience. Heymann was placed in neurological intensive care after a seizure; thus began her year and a half as both doctor and patient, as well as parent, chronicled in this spirited account. It is a critique of present doctor-patient relationships and a call for changes in medical education to sensitize future physicians to their patients' concerns as well as to their ailments. As a patient excluded from medical decisions affecting her own case, even misdiagnosed and callously treated, Heymann speaks candidly of her vulnerability. As a physician, she urges fundamental changes in medical practice so that "doctors would be trained and allowed time to share understanding and decision making with patients."
From Library Journal: After graduating from medical school, Heymann was struck with a seizure and a brain tumor. This calamity is the basis for a harrowing but ultimately riveting medical tale in which Heymann was both a patient and a doctor. A Harvard faculty member, MacArthur Fellow, wife, and mother of two children, Heymann recounts how she juggled some of these projects simultaneously while struggling with severe neurological problems and completing her pediatric medical residency. From her patient's perspective, Heymann learned firsthand of shortcomings in the medical establishment. Consequently, she argues strongly for the introduction into medical practice of a new spirit in which patients and their families are truly included as equal partners in their own healthcare. She also discusses her recent work with Guatemalan refugees, which demonstrates her social conscience but clouds the main theme of her work. Heymann is best when describing her role as patient and the medical outcomes of her case. For both general and informed readers. 100 Ways to Live to 100 Author: Inlander, Charles B. / Hodge, Marie ISBN: 0-9627334-7-4
| Pages: 201Format: PaperbackPublisher: Peoples Medical SocietyPublished: November 1992 Condition:
Price: USD $1.69
From Kirkus Reviews: Despite the cute title, a reasonable roundup of measures that can be taken to promote good health. Inlander, president of the Peoples Medical Society, a consumer health advocacy group, is updating a 1992 guide; he and Kelly, a freelance health writer, organize their information into a structure which hits the major concerns without overwhelming those taking the first steps to a healthier lifestyle. They first address ``Preventing and Managing Medical Conditions'': determining genetic, environmental, and lifestyle risk factors for disease; obtaining recommended screening tests; and how to become a savvy medical consumer (watch out for unnecessary surgery, for onethe current most frequently performed surgical procedures are listed herein) are included. ``Nutrition, Hormones, and Supplements'' is up-to-date on the latest medical recommendations for daily allowances and supplementation, as well as where current research is headed (mostly in the direction of ``anti-aging'' supplements). Injury prevention covers home, travel, outdoor, and food/water safety. Exercise and other lifestyle changes, and mind/body connections, social support, and stress reduction round out the guide. By no means an in-depth prescription for long life; but this works as a reliable short course on how to get started on a healthier life. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP.
