Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Walt Disney World

Frommer's Irreverent Guide
to Walt Disney World

Author: Bair, Diane / Wright, Pamela
ISBN: 0-02-862617-6

Pages: 224
Format: Paperback
Publisher: Macmillan Publishing Company
Published: October 1998
Condition:

Price: USD $1.69

This lively guide lives up to its title by page 5, when it poses the question, "What do Viagra and Walt Disney World have in common?" (Answer: you have to wait an hour for a two-minute ride. B-dum-bum.) Savvy authors Diane Bair and Pamela Wright amuse and inform as they deliver the lowdown on where to see Mickey M. in "person," dump your sullen teens for a few hours, or book a much-needed "serenity massage" after a long day of toddler-wrangling. Handily divided into sections covering accommodations, dining, diversions, and so forth, this wry tome leaves no stone unturned or bloated cartoon character unpunctured. Perhaps most valuable is the flinty, no-nonsense analysis of the various themed Disney hotels--which ones appeal to children, which to adults, and which are best avoided altogether. And if you have any energy left after the Magic Kingdom spits you out, you'll also find info on the Orlando area's other attractions--can you really afford to miss Gatorland? --Rebecca Gleason

Book Description: For readers who are tired of the promotional fluff and brochure-speak that characterizes most travel guides, heres a fresh voice. The Irreverent Guides offer an insiders look at each destination, and take a fun, honest look at everything they review. Its not every day you open up a guidebook to find categories like: *Most overrated museums *Weirdest bunch of public statuary *Bars where you can hear yourself think *Where the supermodels eat and where they dont *Eurotrashiest hotels *Hotels for people who hate conventioneers *Luscious love nests and lavender lodgings *Restaurants that dont live up to the hype *Swingin supper clubs with attitude The Irreverents give you the lowdown, the inside story. They have nothing to sell but the truth, which includes a balance of good and bad. They praise, they trash, they weigh, and leave the final decision up to the reader. Our writers take a special pleasure in leading you where other guides fear to tread.

Dave describes the dark side of tourism with such comical precision that you'll wonder why you ever bother to leave the safety of your living room. For my money, nobody has ever produced a better snapshot of the Baggage Carousel, "where passengers traditionally gather at the end of a flight to spend several relaxing hours watching the arrival of luggage from some other flight, which comes randomly spurting out of a mysterious troll-infested tunnel that is apparently connected to another airport, possibly in a different dimension." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly: A distinctly minor effort by the Miami Herald columnist and author of such previous successes as Dave Barry's Greatest Hits , this guide works too hard for comic effect. There are strained references to inedible airline food, a "Five Booger" ranking from the "Michelin Guide to How Snotty a Restaurant Is," Chicago as "The City with a Great Big Butt." There are tired gags, one involving the translation of a phrase about "the fish of your brother Raoul" and another about using the same map for downtown Vienna, London and Berlin. But the book is not completely devoid of laughs: "Akron: Meeting Yesterday's Challenges Tomorrow" is cited as a typical article from an airline magazine. There is a clever parody of a highway historical marker; and a discussion of the problem of locating a tree in Oregon that doesn't have an ecologist wrapped around it. On every page there are practical ideas about how to get the most out of your visit to Italy, as found in this example from the introduction to Rome: "Remember, "Bisogna vivere a Roma coi costumi Roma" (When in Rome, do as Rome does). Rather than feel intimidated by the art and culture, contemplate the grandeur from a table at a sun-drenched café on Piazza Navona. There's just so much to take in that you will vow to return, and do so by throwing a coin in the Trevi Fountain--it works." Fodor's 98 Italy begins with a comprehensive "Gold Guide," which includes tips and information that will answer your every question, from airports and travel gear to electricity and tipping. The well-organized chapters are arranged in order of tourist interest. The city chapters include an "Exploring" section that offers walking and driving tours listed by neighborhood. Each chapter begins with recommended itineraries and ends with "A-to-Z"--how to get there and around, as well as contacts and resources. Dining and lodging options have personalized descriptions, including interiors, fun facts, and insider advice. Amazon.com: As the name implies, Frommer's Irreverent Guides border on the brazen, offering up tidbits such as home addresses for Fats Domino and Anne Rice, the best "dives worth a drive," finding "sexual hardware" in a store with a sense of humor, and where to meet the giant webbed-footed rodents known as nutria. This guide includes the usual traveler's details, as well. In addition to finding out the coolest places in the Big Easy to stay, you'll have answers to interesting questions like, What is zydeco? Who is a true French Creole? And, where do you find voodoo? Grab this book and do as the author urges: visit New Orleans now--it's getting less authentic and more "big-citified" every day. --Kathryn True --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Book Description: Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world. Let the good times roll with Frommer's Irreverent Guide to New Orleans, the travel guide that unabashedly gives the insider perspective on one of America's most popular destinations. You'll discover where the locals go for real gumbo, how to eat mudbugs, why you should avoid at all costs during Mardi Gras, and how to survive anyway if you just can't help yourself. Learn why burial tombs were built aboveground, and why so many people buried in the local cemeteries died in one year. We'll direct you to favorite psychics, voodoo parlors, and zydeco dance halls and away from the touristed nightclubs locals avoid like the plague (did someone say Planet Hollywood?). The Irreverent Guide to New Orleans will show you the real New Orleans of hothouse music and romance, and clue you in on where to have the most fun in the ultimate party town."

248 Resorts and Retreats Where You Can Get Fit, Feel Good, Find Yourself and Get Away From It All

Amazon.com: Does a trip to the Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa in Belize sound appealing? Or the Grand Lido Sans Souci in Jamaica? How about the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat in Oregon, known as the "Esalen of the Northwest," with reiki, Thai massage, herbal wraps, hydrotherapy, and craniosacral therapy available to soothe your soul? Fodor's Healthy Escapes, here in its sixth edition, is your ticket to feeling pampered, healthy, and fit. Spas across the U.S. and the Caribbean are profiled, including facilities, services available, accommodations, rates, descriptions of atmosphere and typical meals, and directions. Not every spa is geared toward solipsistic luxury; many offer hard-core conditioning programs for athletes in training or nutritional and lifestyle counseling for those struggling with cardiac disease, obesity, or other serious conditions. To help you find the retreat that best meets your needs, the editors have therefore separated them into six classifications: luxury pampering, nutrition and diet, sports conditioning, holistic health, medical wellness, and mineral springs. While many of the spas profiled here are pricey, keeping with what you'd expect from a Fodor's guide, some are more low key, such as Maine's Northern Pines Health Resort. Maps to help you locate the spas come in handy. The glossary is an added bonus, with definitions of healing modalities you may never have heard of (such as panchakarma), massage techniques (including shiroabhyanganasya), and schools of fitness (the increasingly popular Pilates Method). --Erica Jorgensen

Review: "This guidebook makes you yearn for a workout, a low fat salad, a massage, a giant thick towel, and a dainty cup of herbal tea." --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
